Pomeranians are lively energetic toy dogs with a bold temperament. Though small, they come with a huge personality. Because of their fantastic temperaments, they’re one of the most popular dog breeds in the world.
Even though they’re tiny dogs, they would still benefit greatly from using a dog crate. And as suggested by veterinarians, dog crates are essential to raising a Pomeranian. It provides shelter, training and much more!
But because they’re one of the most expensive one-time purchases you’ll have to make for your dog, we’ve tested the best dog crates for Pomeranians.
Benefits of Crate Training Pomeranians
Sticking your Pomeranian inside a dog crate is not cruel. Rather, it provides a lot of benefits according to veterinarians and other experts. As long as you don’t leave them in the crate for an extended period of time, dog crates can teach your Pomeranian a lot of things.
For instance, the best way to housebreak your Pomeranian is through crate training. A Pomeranian will try his or her best not to soil the environment in which they sleep in. So, placing them in a dog crate can train them to control their bowel and bladder. Just make sure you’re there to clean up when inevitable “accidents” happen.
Dogs inherently seek shelter in the wild. Despite belief, they don’t roam around aimlessly unless they have to. Most of the time, they’ll seek out a small enclosure or den for protection. This den provides them with a safe space to help reduce anxiety and stress. A dog crate should provide the same comfort for your Pomeranian.
One of the biggest problems with puppies is teething. You can’t avoid it, but you can teach them early on what they can and cannot chew. Providing them plenty of chew toys in the crate allows your Pomeranian to learn to chew on items that belong to him. In other words, only things you place in the dog crate.
These are just a few benefits to crate training. If you want to learn more, I’d suggest checking out this resource.
Pomeranian Size
Unless you’ve never seen a Pomeranian before, you know that these dogs are small. There’s a reason why they’re categorized as toy dog breeds.
This makes things easier because they don’t grow as much from puppyhood-size and you won’t have to deal with resizing your crate (like with fast-growing large dog breeds).
Since they’re toy dogs, there’s little variation between genders (male and female). The average purebred Pomeranian is roughly 7 to 12 inches tall. In addition, the average weight is between 4 to 8 pounds, making them some of the smallest dog breeds in the world.
Crate Size for Pomeranians
Because the Pomeranian is small, a small dog crate size is sufficient. With that said, the recommended crate size for Pomeranians is 24 inches.
To be honest, you may be able to get away with a smaller crate for Pomeranians. However, it’s uncommon to find crates smaller than the recommended 24 inch. For extra-small Pomeranians, an 22 inch dog crate may be okay.
Still, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Plus, getting a slightly bigger crate won’t be too much of a hassle unless you’re severely limited on space in the home.
The Best Pomeranian Crates
There are many fantastic dog crates for Pomeranians on the internet. However, after thoroughly reviewing each brand’s product, we’ve ranked them as following:
1. MidWest Homes iCrate
The Midwest Homes iCrate sits on top of most best dog crates list for all types of dogs. There is no exception with the Pomeranian. We love the iCrate and it takes the number one spot on our list too.
There’s a lot of great reasons to love this. The iCrate has all the great features we like to see in a dog crate. This crate is the perfect balance of price, functionality, durability and convenience.
As a result, over 22 thousand happy customers have given this product an average of 4.5 stars out of 5. Let’s see why the Midwest Homes iCrate is number 1!
- What to Get: The 24 inch w/ divider & double doors.
- Reviews: 22,000 +
- Stars: 4.5 / 5 Stars
- Highlights: Secured latches, rounded corners, electro-coat finish, removable pan, divider, convenience.
Best Features
Midwest Homes is known in the pet product space for developing superb products. Their dog crate is the same. You can tell they really put a lot of thought into designing this dog crate.
In order to provide a dog safe crate, the Midwest Homes is coated with a non-toxic electro finish in satin black. Though Pomeranians aren’t heavy chewers, this feature is nice because all puppies chew to a certain extent.
The corners are rounded to prevent any potential injuries from your Pomeranian moving around the cage or getting in/out. Pomeranians aren’t extremely hyper and likely won’t move around too much, but the round edges provides peace of mind for owners.
The two slide secured bolt latches are more than enough to keep your Pomeranian safely locked in the crate. There’s almost no way your Pom will get out of this one.
When you decide you don’t need the crate anymore, you’ll be able to easily fold and collapse the crate for easy storage. It’s also a nice feature if you travel with your dog crate a lot.
The divider panel is meant for you to adjust the living space of the crate as your dog grows. However, Pomeranians do not grow as much as say a German Shepherd. So, this is nice, but not necessary by any means.
Of course, all reputable crates come with a removable plastic tray with a secure latch. With this, you’ll be able to easily slide out the bottom of the crate to clean – should an accident happen (and it will).
The Cons
There are really no cons that we can think of with the Midwest Homes iCrate. It has all the great features that we like. The wiring may be too thin for larger dogs, but for Pomeranians, it is perfect.
If we had to nitpick, it may be price. However, this dog crate isn’t even very expensive. For these reasons, the iCrate holds the number one spot on our list.

What Pomeranian Owners Are Saying
Ashley says: “It’s a crate, it works. It’s a good thick metal so it won’t easily be bent by transporting it to various places. We went with the 22 inch and it is perfectly sized for either our weenie or our Pomeranian. A standard size bed pillow in a pillow case fits perfect to make a luscious bed. Our little girl is pleased…”
Andrea says: “I bought the 24″ x 18” crate on Amazon for crate training our Pomeranian puppy at less than half of the price of an identical crate sold at PetCo. Shipping was fast and the crate assembled easily in under five minutes. It is well built, sturdy and the included handle makes it reasonably easy to move around. The 24″ x 18″ crate size is perfect for small dogs, like our Pomeranian (once he’s full grown, that is).”
Helina says: “The 36” choice was perfect for a mini room for my 6lb Pomeranian. I did not want to buy the smaller ones because I wanted him to have room for his bed and a pee pad and his food. Small dogs shouldn’t be able to break out. Setup was so easy, literally just unfolding it out of the box. Highly recommend.”
2. Amazon Basics Dog Crate
If a company as large as Amazon is manufacturing dog crates, then you know crates are essential to dog owners. Everything that Amazon has branded and sells is of high quality. The Amazon Basics dog crate is no exception.
To most people, it’s difficult to tell apart the Amazon Basics crate and iCrate. They share very similar features with minor cosmetics differences. As a result, the Amazon crate ranks number two on our list.
- What to Get: The 24 inch w/ Double Doors.
- Reviews: 11,000 +
- Stars: 4.5 / 5 Stars
- Highlights: Secured latches, (optional) double doors, removable pan, divider panel, foldable frame.
Best Features
Like the Midwest Homes iCrate, the Amazon Basic dog crate is made of high quality. It’s made with sturdy metal construction, meaning that it’s both lightweight and durable.
To secure your Pomeranian, they use the same two slide-bolt latches as a locking mechanism. It’s effective, simple and most importantly, safe to use. There’s no point reinventing something that works so well.
Double doors are an option. I typically recommend it because it makes it more convenient to access your dog or anything else you put in the crate. However, with a small 24 inch crate, this may not be necessary if you want to save a few bucks.
This dog crate comes with a removable plastic tray, as should all reputable dog crates. When your Pomeranian is still in housetraining mode, they’ll likely have accidents in the crate. Simply slide out the bottom, clean it up and slide it back in for a hassle-free experience.
The Amazon Basics crate also comes with a standard divider panel. Yes, it can be convenient very early on, but it’s not necessary with a small dog breed that won’t grow much. Still, it’s nice to have.
For owners that want to travel, the crate will collapse into a compact carrier – making transportation extremely easy with the Amazon Basics crate.
The Cons
Like with the iCrate, we can’t find many things wrong with the Amazon Basics dog crate. It has everything you need for securing your Pomeranian.
Though we generally point out the thinness of the wiring, this will be absolutely no problem with your Pomeranian. There’s almost no way they’re getting out of this. However, with a Pit Bull, it’s a completely different story.

What Pomeranian Owners are Saying
Donna says: “This is a very nice crate I’m using it for a Pomeranian and he has lots of Room. I love the 2 door opening choices so I can use the front or the side for him. It’s not that heavy and it’s really nice quality. I used to show dogs and so I have used a lot of different crates, but I really think this is a very nice quality item.”
AH says: “Great crate with a good price. I got a 24 inch for my Pomeranian and it is a perfect fit. Having good success with using it a potty training tool. I love that it has the double door because it is more versatile. I also bought the Amazon crate pad but wouldn’t recommend that because it fits but has a lot of empty space on the sides.”
Gloria says: “Perfect for a Pomeranian. This is awesome. It got here super quick. Took less than 5 minutes to set up, it is perfect for my puppy with plenty of room. I bought the recommended amazon basics pad to sleep on as well both work great.”
3. New World Metal Dog Crate
The final dog crate on our list is none other than the New World Metal Dog Crate. It’s a cost efficient and effective choice for Pomeranian owners.
For the price, it certainly lacks some useful features that the other two have. However, they’re not a deal breaker and some owners may argue they don’t even need them. Let’s see why the New World crate ranks third on our list.
- What to Get: The 24 inch with double doors.
- Reviews: 1600 +
- Stars: 4.5 / 5 Stars
- Highlights: Double door, metal construction, collapsible crate, slide-bolt locks, removable tray.
Best Features
As described in the name, the New World crate is crafted with high quality metal. Not only does this provide a durable crate, but also makes it lightweight. As a result, it’s great for owners that need to travel with their crate often.
Like the other dog crates, the New World also uses a slide bolt latch to secure the doors of the cage. It’s simple and reliable. There’s no way a Pomeranian escapes from this one no matter how great an escape artist.
There’s a removable plastic tray that latches to the bottom of the crate. If you need to clean it, you can slide it out and back in after you clean up. It’s easy to use and can save you a lot of time!
If you’re like me, you probably don’t want to leave a dog crate in the living room all the time. If you have guests coming over or need to make some room, the New World crate folds into a compact carrier to store away quickly.
The Cons
We’ve mentioned above that the New World was missing some features that we really like. For instance, they don’t have a divider panel to adjust the space of the crate. We don’t think this is a huge problem because you’re getting a relatively small crate and Pomeranians don’t grow as much as other dogs.
Besides the divider, there’s nothing else worth mentioning that would affect our opinion on the New World dog crate. We can nitpick and say the wiring of the frames aren’t think enough. Again, a Pomeranian will never be able to break through no matter how hard they try.
This dog crate is very comparable to the other two. Sometimes it’s priced significantly lower than the others (price fluctuates quite a bit). To learn more about the New World crate and check out the current price, click here.
What Pomeranian Owners are Saying
Mary says: “My Pom fit in it just right. I was able to put it together, well I should say lift it up quickly. And She has’t been able to get out yet. So, that is saying a lot. I would buy again.”
Jody says: “My Pomsky puppy loves it! I was questioning the great price through amazon because other places these run much more. I was afraid of the quality I was going to receive. It is great! Wonderful quality! Just as described!”
Steve says: “Took this with us when we went on vacation to keep our 6 month old Pomsky in at night. Well constructed and folds flat. Would recommend for small maybe medium size dogs. Got a 6 year old boxer that would fit inside but she wasn’t happy with the confined space.”
