For example, dog crates are extremely useful for housebreaking your Greyhound. Puppies need to learn where they can and cannot do their business. 

Because dogs (by nature) do not soil where they sleep, they will try their best to keep their crate clean. Putting your Greyhound in a crate teaches them how to control their bladder and bowel. However, there will certainly be accidents. 

Wild dogs don’t aimlessly roam around as one may think. Instead, they look for a small enclosed dens to use as protection. In the same way, a dog crate can provide that safe space for your Greyhound.

Most owners will be bringing home a puppy Greyhound. If that’s the case for you, make sure to buy a crate that’ll fit a full adult-size Greyhound. It’ll seem a little unusual putting a small dog in such a big crate, but you’ll thank me for it.

Greyhounds are large dogs. It means that they grow very quickly in the first year of life. Buying a smaller dog crate can mean you’ll be purchasing multiple crates, which can be costly.

A Greyhound will typically reach its full size by month 14. These dogs can vary in size, depending on the dog. However, these numbers are for the average purebred Greyhound. 

Crate Size for Greyhounds

With that said, the recommended dog crate size for Greyhounds is 48 inches. For smaller Greyhounds, especially smaller female dogs, you can get by with a smaller 42 inch crate.

If you’re able to, it’s a good idea to examine the dog parents of your Greyhound puppy to gauge the potential size of your new dog. This isn’t an accurate assessment all the time, but it can help. 

If you’re unsure, it may be a good idea to get the larger 48 inch crate. It’s better to get a slightly bigger crate than a slightly smaller crate, provided the necessary space.

Make no mistake, Midwest Homes is a very reputable brand that makes cages for all types of pets. As most reputable companies do, they put in a lot of thought into this dog crate. 

What I like about this crate most is that they spent a lot of time addressing safety concerns. For example, the dog crate has round edges to prevent your Greyhound from accidentally hurting itself. They can be energetic dogs and will likely move around a lot.

The coating on the frame is 100% non-toxic in an electro/satin black finish. In other words, it’s safe for your dog to chew and looks good in the living room. 

Greyhounds aren’t usually very aggressive in trying to escape their crates. However, the slide bolt latch locking mechanism of the iCrate is perfect for containing your dog. The design is simple, but it’s extremely effective. 

One of my favorite features is the divider panel. Because we’re recommending the 48 inch, a small Greyhound puppy might be a little stressed in such a big space. The divider panel allows you to adjust the living area of the crate according to your pups’ current size. 

Having a 48 inch crate in your living all the time isn’t practical. For this, the iCrate can be collapsed and folded in seconds. It makes for easy transportation and storage!

And finally, we have a removable plastic tray that’s safely secured to the bottom. Just in case of accidents, you’ll be able to slide the bottom out, wash it down and slip it back in.

The Cons

There’s very little things wrong with the Midwest Homes iCrate. However, if we had to nitpick, I would have liked to seen thicker wiring for the crate frame.

It’s very unlikely a Greyhound will be able to break free. They’re not known escape artists. However, for peace of mind,  using heavy duty material on the frame would have been nice.

The Amazon Basics dog crate is a high quality dog crate with an affordable price tag. Similar to the iCrate, the Amazon Basics comes with two slide bolt latches that’ll be more than enough to contain your Greyhound.

Even though the double doors is an option, we would suggest spending a few extra bucks for it. Because you’ll be getting an extra large crate, two doors makes it more convenient to access your Greyhound and whatever you decide to put in it.

The Amazon Basics also comes standard with a removable plastic tray. If your Greyhound has an accident, and they certainly will, you’ll be able to clean up in no time!

Not all dog crates come with a divider panel, even some of the good ones. However, the Amazon Basics does. This means you’ll be able to adjust the space of the crate as your Greyhound pup grows into its adult size. 

It’ll only take a few seconds for you to fold this crate into a compact carrier. Whether you need to make extra room in your living room or need to take the crate elsewhere, this feature is super convenient.

The Cons

Because the Amazon Basics dog crate is so similar to the Midwest Homes iCrate, we have the same cons. We would like if the wiring on the cage were a little thicker.

Again, we don’t think your Greyhound will be able to escape this, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a thicker frame for peace of mind. These dogs aren’t usually aggressive or bent on escaping, but some Greyhounds might be.

But because it’s slightly cheaper, the New World crate is lacking some features that we really loved in the first two options. Still, the New World is our third choice because it’s a great crate at a great price. 

Best Features

They call themselves the New World metal crate. As expected, it’s made from high quality metal, meaning it’s both sturdy and lightweight. For a large 48 inch crate, you’d probably want something as light as possible.

Like the other options, the New World uses the time-tested slide bolt latches to secure your Greyhound in the dog crate. It’s effective and there is almost no chance your Greyhound will get out of this one. 

There’s also a removable plastic pan that attaches to the bottom of the crate. If your dog makes a mess in the crate, this will save you a lot of time. Slide the pan out, wipe it down and slide it back then. It’s that easy!

Transportation and storage is easy with the New World dog crate. In less than a minute, you can fold the crate into a compact carrier! This is a feature extra convenient for large crates.

The Cons

The main thing that we wished this crate came with is a divider panel. Greyhounds are large dogs and they grow quickly. Without a divider panel, they may experience stress and anxiety being in a much larger space than necessary. 

Imagine bringing home a 2 month old Greyhound puppy and putting him in an extra-large 48 inch crate. This is no deal breaker, but it’s a nice feature to have. And if you still want a divider, you can buy one from their competitors at Midwest Homes.

We also wish the frame had thicker wires. Like we mentioned, it’s highly unlikely your Greyhound will be able to escape from it. But it’s also nice to have comfort knowing there’s no chance they’ll break free with a heavy-duty frame.

Another feature that we wish it had is the double doors. In fact, it’s not even an upgrade option. This will come in handy while using such a large crate. Two doors means easier access to your pup and all the things you put inside.

Both these features are very nice to have, but they aren’t deal breakers. We still love this crate and think it’s a good low cost alternative for Greyhound owners.
